Tips for Safe Computing

"Prior to Total Email Defense I was inundated with spam including all manner of viruses, illicit material, useless offers, etc. On a daily basis my staff and I would deal with literally 1000's of emails across our entire company, days of wasted time on a monthly basis if you add up all time spent across all personnel. The worst part, however, was missing that important email when if delayed, we lost clients. This was becoming a constant threat to our company's viability.

"After discussing various solutions with various providers, and trying a few that were marginally successful I came across the Total Email Defense solution. T.M.D. was a complete reversal of our downward trend into a spam abyss. I sincerely appreciate and thank Total Email Defense staff for a quick and complete solution to an incredibly difficult and seemingly endless problem."

We wanted to provide some tips on safe computing and what you and your users can do to avoid spam and other computing threats.

We Recommend:

1. Ensure your email software does not automatically display images. Spammers use various techniques to verify which emails sent actually reach the user inboxes and one way they achieve this is to embed images with unique ID codes in emails. Displaying these images is a therefore not recommended and very likely to increase your exposure to spam.

2. Don't open attachments you don't specifically expect. Only recognizing the sender is not enough, the sender's system may have been compromised and the attachment you are opening could be malicious.

3. Run current antivirus and antispyware software.

4. Ensure your operating system software and application software is up to date. There have been a series of serious security vulnerabilities in widely deployed software including Microsoft Windows, Adobe software (Flash and all versions of Acrobat), Microsoft Office and many others. Check with your IT provider or Systems Administrator to verify your systems are fully up to date.

5. Enable automatic updates for Microsoft Windows Systems in particular.

6. Disable Javascript in Adobe Acrobat (check the help in Adobe Acrobat on how to do this) as this feature has been the target of multiple attacks in the last few months.

Additionally, some systems can achieve better block rates by contacting us to arrange for an "IP block lock".
